Olkaria Geothermal Spa & Hell’s Gate National Park
steam, bikes and the Rift’s raw theatre
I’ve spent mornings here watching sunlight pour into Hell’s Gate’s red cliffs and evenings soaking in warm mineral water that smells faintly of earth and sulphur, the kind of smell that says, this is power. Olkaria and Hell’s Gate are a matched pair: one is raw, geological theatre (the park), the other is a human reply to that heat, a spa that turns geothermal by-products into balm and well-being. Together, they make an unforgettable day trip from Nairobi.
What they’re famous for (the quick, honest version)
-
Hell’s Gate: Walkable gorges, climbing walls, cycling safaris, and easy wildlife viewing without the need for a 4×4. It’s rugged and intimate, perfect for active days.
-
Olkaria Geothermal Spa: Africa’s first large-scale geothermal spa, natural warm pools fed by the Rift’s heat, claimed therapeutic benefits thanks to minerals like silica and sulphur. It’s a spa born of power generation, and KenGen runs it as a demonstration of direct geothermal uses.
What to actually do (my day, and how I’d recommend yours)
Morning: Bike or walk to Hell’s Gate
I started early, rented a bike at the park gate, and cycled the flat tracks between towering cliffs. In an hour, you pass geothermal steam vents, towering red walls, and grazing zebra and giraffe. You can also hike the Hell’s Gate Gorge route or try beginner rock-climbing with local guides. The park’s open, walkable nature is what makes it unique, no fences, only tracks, and the occasional curious animal.
Midday: Olkaria Geothermal Spa for a soak
After the gorge, the spa is the perfect reset. KenGen built a Geothermal Health Spa and Demonstration Centre to showcase direct uses of geothermal water: cascading lagoons, steam rooms, and balneological baths. The spa has several lagoons; the third lagoon is gentler and great for longer soaks, while the first lagoon can be very hot (reported up to ~50°C in overflow areas), so approach it with caution. The water feels silky from the minerals, and locals and visitors talk about the skin and muscle benefits, honest relaxation after fresh air, and pedalling. Bookings are advised on busy weekends.
Late afternoon: Boat on Lake Naivasha or sundowners
Finish with a relaxed boat ride on Lake Naivasha or a sundowner at one of the lakeside lodges. There’s something right-sized about ending a geothermal day beside a cooling lake.
Vybe check
-
You can cycle in a national park. Hell’s Gate is one of the few parks where cycling is encouraged; it’s legal, safe (if you follow rules), and spectacular.
-
The spa is direct-use geothermal in action. KenGen uses hot brine and steam for pools, saunas, and even demonstrations like cooking and drying, the spa is both leisure and a live demo of renewable energy solutions. Visiting feels like a soft fieldtrip into Kenya’s clean-energy story.
-
Wildlife and industry co-exist. The Rift’s geothermal power plants hum nearby; the valley still hosts wildlife and migratory birds, which makes the experience uniquely modern-meets-wild.

Practical tips (don’t turn up and learn the hard way)
-
Entry & fees: Pay both park entry (KWS) and spa access — they are separate. Confirm current fees before travel.
-
What to bring: Swimwear, a towel, water, sun protection, sturdy shoes for walking or cycling, and cash for small purchases. Towels may be available to rent, but bring your own for hygiene.
-
Temperatures: Spa pools vary — some are very hot. Test with a toe first and don’t stay in extreme heat too long. Children should be supervised in shallow pools.
-
Booking: Weekends fill up. If you want a quiet spa experience, plan midweek or book in advance through the spa or a tour operator.
-
Combine smartly: Park + spa + boat on Lake Naivasha makes a satisfying full day without rushing. Many tour operators offer this combo.
